DCC dodržiava princípy OSR, inšpiruje sa treťou edíciou Dungeons and Dragons, ale obsahuje aj množstvo inovácií. Postavy sú v hre náhodne generované a začínajú na 0. úrovni ako mešťania či dedinčania. Až po postupe na prvú úroveň si hráč vyberá jedno zo štyroch povolaní (ak je človek) alebo postupuje po úrovniach ako samotná rasa (elf, trpaslík...).
Zaujímavým prvkom tejto hry je využitie tzv. Zocchi kociek , čo je sada obsahujúca 14 rôznostranných kociek, vrátane netradičných s 16 či 24 stranami.
